Where to stay in Pondicherry: the short guide
Pondicherry's appeal is its split personality. The French Quarter, or White Town, has mustard-yellow colonial houses, bougainvillea-lined streets and boutique guesthouses. The rest of town is Tamil, with markets and temples. Beyond it, Auroville and the northern beaches are slower and greener.
Where you stay changes the trip. White Town puts cafes, the Promenade and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram within walking distance, but its heritage stays tend to cost more and have narrow street access. Auroville and the beach roads give space and quiet, but you need a scooter or cab for everything.
Best areas to stay in Pondicherry
White Town (French Quarter)
The most atmospheric base: walk to Promenade Beach, cafes, restaurants, the ashram and the park. Expect heritage villas and boutique guesthouses, often with courtyards.
Promenade Beach and the seafront
Close to the 1.5 km waterfront walk and the rocky beach. Good for short stays and easy morning strolls.
Auroville and Kuilapalayam
Roughly 7 to 15 km north, with eco-style guesthouses, yoga and cafes. Matrimandir viewing needs a free registration; check current timings.
Serenity Beach and Auro Beach
Quieter beaches north of town, with a laid-back surf-and-cafe feel and beach hotels.
ECR (East Coast Road) belt
Resorts and beach properties along the coast road, with pools and space, but more driving to reach town.
Chunnambar and south of town
Backwater and boating area south of Pondicherry, with resorts and a quieter setting.
Getting to Pondicherry and hotels near the station or airport
Puducherry has its own railway station with connections to Chennai and Villupuram. Many long-distance trains reach Villupuram Junction, about 40 km away, from where you continue by train or cab. Villiyanur is another nearby station, around 22 minutes by road from the centre.
Puducherry's airport is small, and most visitors fly into Chennai, around 150 km away. The drive down the East Coast Road typically takes 3 to 4 hours, and a prepaid cab from the airport is the easiest option.
If you plan to see Auroville, Paradise Beach or fishing villages, arrange a cab or rent a two-wheeler, since public transport is thin outside the main town.

Good to know before you book
- Many White Town streets are narrow, so confirm car access and parking before booking a heritage stay.
- Long weekends from Chennai sell out the best villas, so book early for those dates.
- Ask whether the hotel is inside White Town or just outside it. Some listings say 'near the French Quarter' for stays a few km away.
- Carry cash for small cafes and autos, and agree fares in advance.
