Where to stay in Lonavala: the short guide
Lonavala sits at around 624 metres in the Sahyadri range, close to Khandala, and it is the standard weekend escape for Mumbai and Pune. Most people come by car on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway or take a local or express train, which makes quick one-night stays easy.
The catch is crowding. On rainy weekends half of both cities have the same idea, so viewpoints, Bhushi Dam and the market get packed and parking is hard. Weekend rates at resorts are often higher than weekdays, so if your dates are flexible, a Monday to Thursday stay is better value and much calmer.
Best areas to stay in Lonavala
Lonavala town and market
Within a few km of Lonavala station, close to chikki shops, restaurants and the old highway. Easiest for train arrivals and for travelling without a car.
Khandala
About 3 km from Lonavala, usually quieter, with valley views, a lake and a shooting-point viewpoint. A good base if you want fewer crowds.
Tungarli, Bhushi Dam and Kune side
Closer to the dam and waterfalls, with resorts and homestays among the hills. You will want a vehicle here.
Villa clusters and private farmhouses
Popular for groups and families. Villas often include a pool or lawn, but check house rules, party limits and check-in cut-off times.
Kamshet and the Lavasa direction
Further out (Kamshet roughly 15 km, Lavasa roughly 39 km) for paragliding, lakes and quieter stays.
Getting to Lonavala and hotels near the station or airport
Lonavala has its own station on the busy Mumbai–Pune railway line, so it is easy to arrive from either city by train in roughly 1 to 3 hours, depending on the service. Khandala has a station too, but far fewer trains stop there, so plan on Lonavala.
By road, Lonavala is about 65 km from Pune and roughly 80 to 100 km from Mumbai, depending on where you start in the city. Pune airport is the closest airport at about 65 to 68 km, and with Navi Mumbai's airport now operating domestically alongside Mumbai's main airport, check which one your flight uses before planning the drive.
Weekend traffic on the expressway and the ghat sections can double the drive time, especially returning on Sunday evenings.
