Where to stay in Coorg: the short guide
Coorg, also called Kodagu, is a district of hills, coffee, pepper and cardamom estates, and many people do not realise it is a region, not a town. Madikeri is the main town, but most of the appeal is in the estates scattered around Kushalnagar, Virajpet, Somwarpet, Pollibetta and the smaller villages.
Because distances are large and roads wind through the ghats, your choice of base matters. Staying in Madikeri puts you close to shops, restaurants and viewpoints. An estate homestay gives you plantation walks, home-cooked Kodava food and silence, but expect long drives to anything else.
Best areas to stay in Coorg
Madikeri
The main town, with the most hotels, restaurants and viewpoints such as Raja's Seat. The best choice if you want to avoid long drives.
Kushalnagar, Dubare and Kakkabe
East and south of Madikeri, near the Dubare elephant camp, the Cauvery river and Tibetan settlements at Bylakuppe. Estate stays are common.
Virajpet and Gonikoppal
Southern Coorg, greener and less touristy, with estates and access to forests and waterfalls.
Somwarpet, Pollibetta and Siddapur
Quieter coffee country with homestays and luxury estate resorts.
Chelavara and Kabbe Hills
A higher, cooler area with waterfalls and hill hikes, around 40 km from Madikeri.
Getting to Coorg and hotels near the station or airport
Coorg has no railway station or airport of its own. Mysuru Junction is the usual railhead, around 100 to 130 km away depending on where you stay, and the drive takes roughly three hours. Hassan and Subramanya Road are other nearby stations for some properties.
The nearest airports are Mysuru, Mangalore, Kannur and Bengaluru. Bengaluru is the most common flight, about 250 to 290 km and often seven hours or more by road. Overnight Airavat buses from Bengaluru reach Madikeri in the early morning.
Avoid driving the ghat sections at night. Distances on the map look short, but bends and slow traffic mean estates can be well over an hour from Madikeri.
