Where to stay in Mumbai: the short guide
Mumbai is a long, narrow city, and your hotel area decides how much time you spend in traffic. South Mumbai, around Colaba, Fort and Marine Drive, has the Gateway of India, heritage buildings and the busiest sightseeing. The western suburbs, Bandra, Juhu and Andheri, have beaches, cafes, nightlife and the airport.
Business travellers usually choose Bandra Kurla Complex or Lower Parel, which are close to offices. If you only need a night near a flight, the airport belt in Andheri East, Sahar and Vile Parle is the most practical, though it is far from South Mumbai.
Best areas to stay in Mumbai
Colaba, Fort and Marine Drive
The classic first-timer base: the Gateway of India, Colaba Causeway, heritage hotels and sea views. Busy on weekends, and far from the airport.
Bandra West
Cafes, restaurants, nightlife and the Bandra–Worli Sea Link. Stylish boutique hotels and serviced apartments, with high demand year round.
Juhu
Beachfront stays popular with families and domestic leisure travellers. Close to Juhu Beach and the ISKCON temple.
Andheri East, Sahar and Vile Parle (airport belt)
The best choice for early or late flights, with many airport and business hotels. Metro stations at Chakala and Western Express Highway help.
Bandra Kurla Complex
Mumbai's modern business district, with upscale hotels, close to the airport and the Bandra Terminus.
Lower Parel, Worli and Dadar
Converted mills, offices and shopping in Lower Parel, and a central, well-connected base around Dadar and Shivaji Park.
Getting to Mumbai and hotels near the station or airport
Mumbai has several major stations. CSMT and Mumbai Central serve South Mumbai, Dadar is a central interchange, Bandra Terminus and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Kurla) handle many long-distance trains, and Borivali serves the northern suburbs. Pick a hotel on the Western or Central line, or near a Metro station, to cut travel time.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) is in the north-west, with many hotels in Andheri East, Sahar and Vile Parle. Navi Mumbai International Airport opened in December 2025 for domestic flights, with international operations scheduled to follow from July 2026. If you book a hotel by airport, check which airport your airline uses, since the two are far apart.
Distances are deceptive: South Mumbai to the airport can take 1.5 hours or more at rush hour. Check your flight time before choosing a hotel area.

Good to know before you book
- Pick your area by your main activity: sightseeing (Colaba), nightlife (Bandra), a flight (airport belt) or business (BKC, Lower Parel).
- Allow generous travel time between South Mumbai and the airport, especially at rush hour or in heavy rain.
- Check whether the hotel is near a Metro or local train station, as this often matters more than distance.
- Mumbai rooms are often smaller than elsewhere, so check room size and inclusions.
