Where to stay in Varanasi: the short guide
Varanasi is really three different places to stay. The ghat area around Dashashwamedh and Godowlia puts you inside the old lanes, a short walk from the Ganga aarti and the Kashi Vishwanath area. Assi Ghat and Lanka feel calmer and more youthful. Cantonment is the modern, organised side of the city with wide roads, large hotels and quick access to the station.
The trade-off is simple: staying in the ghat lanes means atmosphere and walking, but narrow lanes where cars cannot reach. Staying in Cantonment means comfort and easy transport, with a cab or auto ride of several kilometres to the river every time.
Best areas to stay in Varanasi
Godowlia and Dashashwamedh Ghat
The most central base for aarti and temple visits. Many guesthouses here are within a few hundred metres of the main ghat, but the last stretch is on foot through narrow lanes.
Assi Ghat and Lanka
A calmer southern end of the ghats with cafes, yoga and a younger crowd, close to the Banaras Hindu University side. Lanka has good road connections to the ghats.
Cantonment
Wide tree-lined roads, large hotels and shopping near Varanasi Junction. It is a good choice if you want a quiet, comfortable room, but it is roughly 4 to 6 km from the ghats.
Riverfront heritage hotels
A small number of restored palaces and haveli hotels sit directly on the ghats, giving Ganga views and easier boat access.
Ashrams and dharamshalas
Many pilgrims stay in simple ashram rooms near the river. Rooms are basic and rules vary, so read the check-in and curfew terms before booking.
Getting to Varanasi and hotels near the station or airport
Varanasi Junction, in Cantonment, is the main railway station. Hotels along Mall Road and nearby are often 400 m to 1.5 km from it, while the Godowlia ghat area is roughly 3.5 to 4 km away, and Assi Ghat is further south.
The airport is about 21 to 27 km from the city, depending on which part you stay in. Pre-booked taxis and app cabs are the usual way in, and the trip commonly takes close to an hour.
Before booking a ghat-side room, ask exactly where the car can stop. Many properties are reached on foot through lanes too narrow for vehicles, so heavy luggage can be a real hassle.
Hotels for every budget in Varanasi
Budget guesthouses and hostels
Concentrated around Godowlia, Dashashwamedh and Assi. Rooftop terraces with river views are common, but check hot water, air-conditioning and noise from the lanes.
Mid-range hotels
Good value in Cantonment and along the Mall Road, with restaurants, lifts and parking. Some mid-range ghat-side hotels offer river views at a premium.
Premium and riverfront stays
Luxury hotels sit in Cantonment, and a few palace-style hotels sit on the ghats themselves. Compare transfer arrangements, because the location changes how you get around.

- Assi Ghat morning: quieter bathing and yoga scene at the southern end.
- Sarnath: the Buddhist site where the Buddha gave his first sermon, a short drive from the city.
- Banaras Hindu University campus: a large green campus south of the ghats, with the Vishwanath temple inside.
When to visit Varanasi
| October to February | Cool, dry and clear. Best for boat rides and walking. Dev Deepawali, when the ghats are lit with lamps, falls in November and books out early. |
|---|---|
| March to June | Hot, sometimes extremely so. Rates drop; plan sightseeing for dawn and dusk. |
| July to September | Monsoon raises the Ganga, floods lower ghats and can limit boat rides and aarti viewing positions. |
Good to know before you book
- Ask the hotel whether the last stretch to the property is walkable with luggage and how long it takes.
- Aarti and festival days sharply raise rates for ghat-side rooms, so lock in dates early.
- Cantonment hotels are quieter, but allow time for traffic when going to the river for the evening aarti.
- Carry small change for boats, rickshaws and temple offerings, and agree prices before boarding.
