Where to stay in Shimla: the short guide
Shimla spreads across a ridge in the Himalayan foothills, and the stretch around Mall Road and the Ridge is the heart of it. Hotels here put you within walking distance of cafes, shops and the main sights, but the central lanes are steep, and vehicle access is limited.
Quieter options sit a few km out, such as Chhota Shimla, Mashobra and Kufri. These have better views and fewer crowds, but you will be relying on taxis. The Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage line, is a highlight and shapes how many visitors arrive.
Best areas to stay in Shimla
Mall Road and the Ridge
The centre of Shimla, with shops, cafes, Christ Church and open views. Most convenient for first visits, but it can be crowded and expensive.
Lakkar Bazaar and Lower Bazaar
Steep, busy market areas below the Ridge with budget hotels. Good value, but narrow lanes and stairs.
Chhota Shimla and Summer Hill
Residential neighbourhoods a few km from the centre, quieter, with hotels and homestays with valley views. Summer Hill also has its own halt on the toy-train line.
Jakhu Hill side
Higher up, with forest walks and the Jakhu temple. Peaceful, but a steep drive.
Mashobra and Kufri
About 13 km and 16 km out, respectively. Orchards, pine forest and snow in winter, with resorts and cottages.
Naldehra and Chail
Further afield (roughly 22 to 25 km and 45 km) for golf, forests and a calmer feel.
Getting to Shimla and hotels near the station or airport
Shimla has its own station at the end of the Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge line, which is about 96 km long and takes roughly five to six hours from Kalka. Kalka is the main railhead, around 85 to 96 km away, and direct trains from Delhi and other cities reach it. The Shimla station is about 1 to 2 km from the Mall Road area.
Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti is about 20 to 22 km out, with a limited schedule. Many travellers use Chandigarh Airport instead, about 113 to 125 km away and three to four hours by road. Delhi is around 340 km, roughly seven to eight hours.
The Mall Road area is largely pedestrian at busy times, so ask your hotel where taxis can drop you and whether porters are available.
