Where to stay in Mussoorie: the short guide
Mussoorie is strung along a ridge about 2,000 metres above Dehradun, and its hotels cluster in two moods. Mall Road and Kulri put you in the busy centre with shops, cafes and ropeway access. Landour, around 4 km higher up, is quieter and more atmospheric, with old cottages, pine forests and walks.
Most first-time visitors prefer to stay central, since it is more walkable. If you want slow mornings and fewer crowds, Landour is worth the extra taxi ride. Weekend traffic from Delhi can clog both the road up from Dehradun and the Mall, so factor in extra time on Fridays and Sundays.
Best areas to stay in Mussoorie
Mall Road, Kulri and Library Chowk
The commercial centre, stretching from Library Chowk to Picture Palace. Walk to cafes, shopping and the Gun Hill ropeway, with plenty of hotels in every range.
Landour and Lal Tibba
Around 4 km above the centre, the old cantonment area has cottages, a clock tower, bakeries at Char Dukan and quiet wooded lanes.
Camel's Back Road
A scenic, relatively quiet stretch of road below the Mall, good for sunset walks, with a mix of hotels and homestays.
Picture Palace and Barlowganj side
Practical for taxis and buses, with simpler hotels, and a short walk back to the Mall.
Kempty Road and Jharipani
Further from the centre, with valley views and waterfalls nearby. You will need a car for most sightseeing.
Dhanaulti and beyond
A quieter option further up the road that works well if you want pine forests and little crowding.
Getting to Mussoorie and hotels near the station or airport
There is no railway in Mussoorie. The nearest railhead is Dehradun, about 34 to 35 km below, and taxis or shared cabs make the climb in roughly an hour and a quarter. From Delhi, overnight services run to Dehradun and a daytime Shatabdi also serves the route, so you can arrive the same morning.
The nearest airport is Jolly Grant near Dehradun. It is around 22 km from Dehradun town and about 50 to 60 km from Mussoorie, which usually means close to two hours by road. Delhi is roughly 270 to 280 km by road.
Vehicle movement on the Mall is restricted at busy times, so hotels right on it can be awkward with luggage. Ask your hotel where cars can stop and whether porters are available.
Hotels for every budget in Mussoorie
Budget hotels and homestays
Plentiful near Picture Palace, Library Bazaar and along the lower roads. Check parking and the walk uphill, since many cheaper hotels are on steep slopes.
Mid-range hotels
The largest group, on or near Mall Road and Camel's Back. View rooms cost extra, so compare valley-view and road-facing rates.

Good to know before you book
- Weekend traffic from Delhi can add an hour or more on the climb, so leave early on Fridays.
- In winter, confirm that your room has heating and hot water, and ask about snow-chain advice for taxis.
- Steep lanes mean luggage trolleys are of little use, so pack light or arrange porters.
- For a quieter stay, choose Landour or Camel's Back Road and take a taxi into the Mall for the evening.
