Where to stay in Ooty: the short guide
Ooty is a hill town spread over several slopes, so a central hotel near Charing Cross or Ooty Lake keeps the main sights, restaurants and the bus stand close. Further out, Fern Hill, Lovedale and Elk Hill have quieter cottages and resorts with valley views.
Coonoor, about 18 km away and also on the toy train line, is smaller and calmer, with tea estates and heritage bungalows. It makes a good alternative base if you want to avoid Ooty's summer crowds.

Coimbatore Airport is about 85 to 90 km away, usually around 3 hours by road up the ghat. From Bengaluru, the road through Mysuru and the forest reserves takes 7 to 8 hours, and the forest stretch has night-time traffic restrictions.
