Where to stay in Agra: the short guide
Most visitors spend one night in Agra so they can see the Taj Mahal at sunrise, when the light is softest and the crowds are thinnest. That makes location important: a hotel within walking or short-ride distance of the gates lets you be in the queue before dawn.
Taj Ganj, the old neighbourhood beside the south and east gates, has budget hotels and rooftop restaurants with Taj views. Fatehabad Road and the roads near the East Gate have most of the mid-range and luxury hotels, while Agra Cantt and Sadar Bazaar suit train travellers.
Best areas to stay in Agra
Taj Ganj
The closest area to the Taj Mahal's south and east gates. Budget hotels, guesthouses and rooftop cafés, some with direct views of the dome.
Taj East Gate Road
Luxury and upper mid-range hotels a short walk or battery-cart ride from the East Gate, including some with Taj views from the rooms.
Fatehabad Road
Agra's main hotel strip, 2 to 3 km from the Taj. Chain hotels, restaurants and good value for families.
Sadar Bazaar and Agra Cantt
Near the main railway station, with shopping, street food and business hotels. Practical for early trains.
Near Agra Fort
Central and well connected, with older hotels near the fort and the Agra Fort railway station.
Sikandra and the Delhi road
Larger resorts and hotels on the way in from Delhi, near Akbar's Tomb. Better for travellers with a car.
Getting to Agra and hotels near the station or airport
Agra Cantt is the main railway station, about 6 to 7 km from the Taj Mahal, and fast trains from Delhi take under two hours. Agra Fort station is closer to the old city and serves some trains towards Rajasthan.
The Yamuna Expressway links Agra with Delhi and Noida, usually a drive of 3 to 4 hours. Agra Airport has only a few flights, so most visitors arrive by train or road.
Petrol and diesel vehicles cannot go right up to the Taj Mahal. You leave your car or auto at the parking area and take a battery bus, golf cart or walk the last stretch, so check how far your hotel is from the nearest gate.

Good to know before you book
- The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, so plan your Agra night around that.
- In December and January, fog can hide the dome at sunrise; keep a second morning free if the view matters.
- Large bags are not allowed inside the Taj Mahal. A hotel nearby means you can leave luggage in your room.
- Ask your hotel how far it is to the nearest gate on foot, not by car.
